Bouldering in Cyprus
Until recently, Cyprus was better known for its beaches and sunshine than for its rock climbing. Yet, in the hills of Droushia and Inia, overlooking the wild Akamas Peninsula, local climbers began discovering a vast network of sandstone boulders. What started as a handful of exploratory days quickly became a long-term project to clean, document, and share hundreds of problems across the area.
The movement grew organically. Word spread among visiting climbers, new sectors were developed, and the local bouldering community came together. Today, Cyprus offers a compact but rich bouldering landscape that blends Mediterranean charm with a sense of true exploration.
Bouldering itself is a simple and expressive form of climbing, performed without ropes or harnesses, relying on crash pads and spotters for protection. The simplicity of the discipline reflects the experience in Cyprus: peaceful, raw, and authentic. Whether projecting a steep sandstone roof or trying your first climb, it’s an invitation to slow down, connect with nature, and enjoy the island’s quiet energy.
What makes Cyprus particularly special is the feeling of discovery. Many lines are still being cleaned or climbed for the first time. Every season adds new sectors and problems, and the story of Cypriot bouldering is still being written. Literally and figuratively.
The Cyprus Bouldering Guidebook
The "Cyprus Bouldering Guide" book was born out of the need to share the passion for bouldering and bring this growing climbing scene together. To document what had been developed, and to guide newcomers safely and confidently through the maze of valleys, bushy riverbeds and farmer fields.
Designed for both locals and visiting climbers, the book includes accurate maps, GPS coordinates, topos, approach details, problem descriptions, safety notes, and photography that captures the beauty of each area. It also introduces the local ethics, environment, and access considerations to help ensure sustainable development.
Whether you are new to bouldering or simply new to Cyprus, this guidebook is your key to unlocking this unique climbing destination. It helps you plan days efficiently, find the best sectors for your level, and make the most of your time on the island's sandstone.
